UKHF in 2013

Thank you to our donors!

We are happy to say that we have accomplished a number of things this year thanks to your continued support, mainly, successfully putting down concrete floors in the school and installing staff latrines. This means that the application for registration, long overdue, is currently with the Dept of Education. We are able to pay the teachers' salaries for the entire upcoming academic year, guaranteeing uninterrupted schooling for the pupils. However, increasing the teachers’ salaries to government level is a priority to avoid losing valuable staff.

Our next major projects are to provide sufficient desks for each student, install a solar lighting system and commence the building of the new Girls’ Safe House. This last is a major project and we will be applying to a major funding body.

UKHF Annual fundraiser and auction of promises

UKHF had a very busy and exciting summer. Our Annual Fundraiser and Auction of Promises was held on August 10th 2013 in the magnificent village of St. Andre De Roquepertuis in the south of France.

There was a wonderful turn out and our guests enjoyed a delicious barbeque buffet before getting on with the serious business of bidding.

Lucky winners walked away with beautiful artwork, tickets to sold out theatre productions, exquisite places to stay, poetry readings and rare artefacts and jewellery to name but a few. We wish to thank, once again, the incredibly generous people who provided these superb promises.

We are very proud to announce that the event raised a total of 6,284.00€.

UKHF’s new patron, Dame Helen Mirren

We are very proud to announce our new Patron, Oscar winning actress Dame Helen Mirren, who has said ‘how pleased she is to be appointed Patron of UKHF and looks forward to offering her support to this very worthy cause'.

Helen Mirren is one of the best-known and most respected actresses with an international career that spans stage, screen and television. She has won many awards for her powerful and versatile performances, most notably the Academy Award in 2007 for her role in The Queen. In television she is known for her role as DCI Jane Tennison in Prime Suspect, her Emmy award winning performance as Elizabeth 1 and most recently Phil Spector for which she was nominated for an Emmy.  Mirren’s recent projects include, the spy action movie RED2 and Hitchcock where she stars with Anthony Hopkins. This year she reprised her role as Queen Elizabeth II on the London stage in The Audience, to acclaimed reviews and won the Olivier Award for Best Actress.

For our 2013 auction, Dame Helen generously offered signed memorabilia from The Audience. The lucky winner now owns a signed poster, a signed programme and a script of the play.

What we’ve achieved so far

Thanks to your generous donations, UKHF has been able to complete a number of vital and major works to the new school building.

Concrete floors and latrines are a prerequisite for government recognition, and we are proud to state that these were completed last spring. A water tank has also been successfully installed so the children and teachers can now enjoy clean running water.

Uganda 2013

During our visit to Uganda in February, we were able to donate a first aid kit and information on emergency health care. We provided the school with much needed items for daily use from books to sports equipment and we were encouraged by the success of the harvest the school had planted, helping it to become more self sufficient in the long term.

In order to secure the good functioning of the management of the school, we were able to appoint an accountant based in Kampala who will be responsible for the school accounts.

L’Association Amicale des Enfants de Luuka

We are also happy to announce the creation of the French association, l’Association Amicale des Enfants de Luuka, set up by Christiane Duvelius. Their mission is to work alongside UKHF to improve the lives of the orphans at the Healing Focus Orphanage Centre.

None of this would be possible without your kind support and continuing generosity. We remain eternally grateful.
