The aim of Project Vernon is to commission, build and install a monument dedicated to the Naval and Military heritage of the former naval establishment HMS Vernon.  Mine Warfare, Diving, Explosive Ordnance Disposal, Torpedo Anti-Submarine Warfare, Maritime Trade, Naval Control of Shipping and Small Ships Engineering remain active elements of combat operations within the service today.  Members of these disciplines and more, trained and worked at the site and the monument is intended to represent all arms of the Royal Navy who served there.

The monument will commemorate not only the history of the Vernon site but will also pay tribute to the expertise and bravery of generations of naval personnel.  The chosen design will serve as a lasting reminder that the task of making the sea and the land safe in times of peace and conflict continues to this very day.

This was evidenced very recently, September 2016, by the removal of a WWII bomb from Portsmouth Harbour, close to Gunwharf Quays, by the local RN Diving Unit.
