Baynards Zambia Trust
Who we are
BZT raises funds in the UK to support ZRDF, our Zambian delivery partner, which works with local communities in a very isolated rural area of Zambia. The objective is to empower communities to tackle issues of very low incomes, access to education and to healthcare. ZRDF is working with 15 rural communities with an estimated population of 90,000 people in an area of 4,500 square miles.
BZT funds the following initiatives, which are holistic in nature and encompass:
* Education: Providing new classrooms and teachers' houses which unlocks the Zambian Government funding trained teachers; also, the provision of teaching materials.
* Agriculture: Raising family income and household nutrition through subsistence farmers diversifying crops from only growing maize to including higher value crops such as bananas and soya beans.
* Income: Improving family incomes by introducing Savings and Internal Loan Communities (SILC) - effectively village banks - which encourage local entrepreneurship amongst women.
* HIV/AIDS: Addressing the scourge and stigma of HIV and AIDS through education, testing and supporting Health Clinics.
The approach is holistic. Improved income from farming and SILC enable healthier diets and improved school attendances and attainment, which in turn are encouraged by much improved school infrastructure. Reducing the incidence of early marriage, HIV and AIDS and improving opportunities for women are all part of this approach.
In 2017 work commenced in five new very isolated communities which have been regularly visited by both BZT Trustees and by ZRDF. They are more physically isolated than the other ZRDF communities and exhibit severe evidence of deprivation with mono-cropping of maize and very low incomes. Three communities had no clean water with mud and wattle school facilities, no trained teachers and significant numbers of orphans and vulnerable children.
In line with our well-established practice, all UK and travel costs to Zambia are personally paid by BZT Trustees.
