CRESS UK (Christian Relief and Education for the South Sudanese) was formed in 2011 and is a small but growing charity focused on improving life for the South Sudanese living in Northern Uganda, displaced by ongoing civil war.

Our aim is to encourage self-sufficiency and growth by providing training, education and health support enabling some of these amazing people to form self-sufficient, sustainable and ethical communities that do not require Western aid.

In the medium to long term, when the refugees can return to their homes in South Sudan, they should be able to take these skills with them and rebuild their communities.

We mainly focus our efforts in the Central Equatorial region and usually work within the Diocese of Kajo Keji.

Our work and achievements:

  • We sponsor 90 children, in all stages of education. All of our Sponsors have a named child, and the children know who their sponsor is writing to them once a year. Sponsors are provided an annual progress report.
  • In September 2015 the Liwolo Clinic was opened, providing health care in the area.
  • The clinic employs a nurse, midwife, lab assistant and dispensing assistant. Solar power to the clinic means medicines can be kept cool and investigative testing carried out on site.
  • Annually we deliver a teaching conference, which in 2015 was attended by pastors from several dioceses and was held at the Kajo Keji Cathedral.
  • Helping small business is a vital element of our work and in particular, we work with the women of the community. Florence set up her knitting business a year ago and has since secured two further contracts and opened a tea room!
  • We fund local people to attend the Kasenge Riverford Organic Farm School in Uganda. They return with much hope and knowledge, putting what they have learnt into practice and share with others.  We also supply tools and seeds to help them get their own gardens started.  Alongside the farm teaching groups, a life skills course is run, CRESS plans to develop the project further.
