Homepage

Fishing for Heroes was established in July 2009 and was registered as a charity on the 1st of April 2010 (charity number 1135355) in order to provide therapy and support for both veterans and serving military personnel from the British and Commonwealth Armed Forces who may be suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Combat Fatigue and any other mental or emotional disorder due to active service. We have no restriction with regards to the theatre of war the veterans took part in; hence we include service in amongst other places such as Korea, Malaysia, Northern Ireland, Falklands and Kosovo as well as more recent conflicts

What we achieve

We:

  • Provide a four day day fly fishing course of instruction
  •  Provide continued mentoring sessions and ongoing support. This is to reinforce the skills taught whilst in our programme, to give a reduced sense of isolation, suffered by many veterans and again enhancing their levels of self confidence.
  • Provide further fishing trips and expeditions to help compliment the fishing therapy, thus providing them with the means of a self therapy with the potential for suitable candidates to develop into a career via the ADB coaching programme or by being trained to a recognised national standard

 The Cost of Helping

The cost incurred will include

  • Transportation:

Travell costs to and from the course venues.

  • Accommodation

The accommodations we use are family type bed and breakfast establishments. This gives us low cost and safe accommodation whilst putting the veterans back into a family environment, for some possibly for the first time in many years.

  • 4 day Fly fishing course

Each veteran receives a 1:1 assessment and tuition from a fully qualified instructor/assessor all of whom are very experienced in dealing with people who have behavioral challenges.

  • Continued support and mentoring

This element is tailored to each individual as their needs will vary in response to the effects of the support given to the individual veteran or serving personnel.

The cost of caring for the veterans can vary and the help and support which we offer depends very much on each individual, however we have found over the last 3 years that the average cost to the charity is in the region of £1000 per annum, per person.
