'Run for the Sea' 2013 Challenge

Throughout 2013, Helen Webb and Rachel Lopata are running for the seas

They have set themselves the challenge of running at least six half marathons to raise funds to help UK seas.  They have done this because the oceans are in real trouble and they need our urgent help. Each year:

  • Discarded plastic bags kill thousands of mammals, birds and fish who eat them mistaking them for food.
  • 6.4 million tonnes of rubbish is thrown into the oceans.
  • Thousands of acres of reef are destroyed by pollution and waste.

Industrial fishing has depleted stock of tuna, cod, swordfish and marlin by as much as 90 percent. Water temperatures are also rising and becoming more acidic due to global warming, causing coral reefs and marine life to die affecting the whole food chain. We love the sea and recognise its’ health is vital for us all. It provides food, transportation, and oxygen for us to breath.

Helen and Rachel's challenge is this…they will run six half marathons throughout 2013.

  • Brighton – Feb
  • Silverstone – March
  • Sheffield – May
  • Run to the Beat - Spet
  • Nottingham - Sept
  • Birmingham - Oct

Their challenge will raise money for Sea-Changers – a charity that raises vital funds for UK marine conservation projects ( To find out more about their work visit: If you can support helen and Rachel in our challenge that would be wonderful and very much appreciated.Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor them and donations will be quickly processed and passed to charities.
