Phil's Parish Walk for Rukambura -

Well done to Goboka Rwanda Trust Trustee Phil Bramhall, who has successfully completed 61.5 miles in the famous Isle of Man Manx Telecom Parish Walk 2012 in aid of Goboka Rwanda Trust’s Rukambura Youth Centre project.

The challenge started at 8am on a bright and sunny Saturday 23rd June – when Phil, along with 1,819 other speed-walkers, strode out from the National Sports Centre in Douglas, the Island’s capital, and headed towards checkpoints in each of the seventeen parishes, walking roads, hills and coastal routes around the entire Island to achieve his walking ambition for Rukambura.

Walking in some very challenging conditions as the weather turned at times to heavy driving rain, Phil was still averaging a rate of 4.3mph. He completed his Parish Walk in the north of the island at Leyzare, clocking in at 00:03am on Sunday 24th June, after 16 hours of continuous walking, finishing in 240th position.

To give you an idea of the speed walking phenomena that is the Parish Walk, the joint winners Vinny Lynch and Richard Gerrard crossed the 85-mile finish line in under 15 hours – setting a new record. They overtook the long-time leader in the walk, Michael George, five miles before Douglas.

This was Phil's first Parish Walk and he has been in training for many weeks to get in to full fitness for the challenge ahead. Elated, Phil has managed to beat his original 50-mile target by 11.5 miles. He is also set to beat his fund raising target thanks to the generosity and kindness of friends and supporters of the Trust. From early figures we estimate donations have raised over £700 for the Rukambura Youth Centre. We will keep you posted when we have the final figure raised.

All donations and money from sponsorships will go towards helping to complete the building and kitting-out of the much-needed Youth Community Centre in Rukambura village in Rwanda. When completed, the centre will provide vital facilities and a social meeting point for isolated and vulnerable young people. Rukambura village is an on-going project area supported by The Goboka Rwanda Trust.

This site has just gone live, and even though the event has passed, it's still not to late to make a donation to this very worthwhile cause. Both Phil and all at The Goboka Rwanda Trust would like to thank you in advance!
