Educating The Children

Who we are

Educating The Children (ETC) is a UK registered charity established in 2009 whose mission is to empower young women in East Africa through education/training that leads to employment. They work shoulder to shoulder with communities to identify gaps in local ecosystems and collaboratively work out solutions that enables economic empowerment for their young women.

They started by building the first secondary school for girls in the Masai Mara in Kenya in partnership with the local government. Previously the region had 47 primary schools and no secondary schools. A secondary school certificate is required for any kind of formal employment. This award winning school is now run by the community and has over 400 boarders. More recently they have launched a work readiness bootcamp in Kampala, Uganda, which provides 21st century digital skills to young unemployed women. It then links them up to an ecosystem of local partners that consists of universities, head hunters and businesses.

A core part of our values include:

  • “Handing over” the solution/ project to the community within 5-7 years, ensuring true sustainability and empowerment
  • Building a sisterhood network of “women helping women” to amplify impact
  • Focusing on high quality programs that provide depth of impact vs reach
