Highwoods Preservation Society campaigned successfully to save 87 acres of ancient woodland in Bexhill-on-Sea from development. Since 1980, the registered charity has maintained the woods as a wildlife habitat with free public access under a management agreement with Rother District Council. The woods are the largest surviving example of coppiced sessile oak in the South East and the society’s researches into the rich flora and fauna led to their being declared a Site of Special Scientific Interest. The society receives annual grant from the council, but its work is largely dependent on the generosity of the public.
