School-Home Support (SHS)
Who we are
School-Home Support (SHS) is a charity working with children and families to maximise educational opportunities and improve life chances. Partnering with schools, local authorities and communities, SHS looks beyond the classroom to understand and tackle the issues affecting children’s learning, such as poverty, housing, and mental health. Since 1984, we have used early intervention to break intergenerational cycles of deprivation and low aspiration, replacing them with children in school and ready to learn. Our approach creates sustained change in families, improving school attendance, children's engagement in learning and behaviour at school. In 2019/20, SHS made 44,542 interactions and delivered 21,782 targeted interventions. 2 years of SHS support is equal to 42 extra days in school (on average per pupil per year, for our most vulnerable pupils struggling with attendance).
Our impact in 2019/20:
- 71% of the pupils we supported within mainstream schools improved their attendance, equating to an average 14 extra days in school
- 87% of pupils we supported in mainstream schools recorded an improvement in their behaviour
- 73% of parents we worked with became more engaged with their child’s learning and their child’s school
- Our most improved pupils are now 54% more likely to achieve five A*-C grades at GCSE
