Restoration Project

Once Massey had been lifted from the water it became clear several key areas would need attention.

The steel hull of the vessel had rust holes on a number of its hull plates and many of the rivets needed to be replaced. The timber rubbing strakes that protect the vessels hull from damage had rotted through and the timber decking throughout the vessel was very thin and would need to be completely replaced.

Engines & Firepumps

Massey Shaw 1930's marine engines and firepumps  were worn and would need an  overhaul if the vessel was to be brought back to full working condition. Early in the project they were removed from the vessel and sent to be rebuilt by a specialist company.

In order to preserve as much of the original vessel, it was decided to use as much of the original teak decking to make the new flooring and galley fittings  on the restored vessel. The vessel is operated by the use of a telegraph system which controls both main engines and the firepumps. This has been carefully restored and returned to working order by our team and should now provide many years of service.

On completion of the works, the vessel will be certificated by the MCA to carry passagers and operated on the Thames for many years to come.

Once Massey is returned to London the restoration element of the project will have finished, however the society will require volunteers and support to keep it running and maintain it in working order.
