The Society

The Society was formed in 1982 in order to preserve the famous fireboat Massey Shaw and provide an opportunity to educate members of the public about its history and marine firefighting on the River Thames.

The Society is run entirely by volunteers and provides opportunities for people of all ages to learn about the vessel, marine skills and participate in activities on the River Thames.

Educational Project

In 2008, the Society was successful in its bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund for a grant to restore the vessel and set up an Educational Project. The Educational Project has produced an interactive drama, based on the WWII Auxillary Fire Service and the vessels history which is now performed in Primary schools across London.

Additionally, Massey Shaw's archives and historical information are now being catologued by our volunteers so that they can be used for research and form part of our on going legacy.
