Sponsor A Gambian Teacher
Who we are
The main aim of Sponsor A Gambian Teacher (SAGT) is to promote the education of children in The Gambia, West Africa. SAGT does this by providing individual Gambian people with the opportunity to train as a teacher, work as a teacher and be supported in their teaching of local children.
In the academic year 2012/13 we began to support two students to train and teach in Mansa Colley Bojang Nursery School in the village of Jallanbang, near Brikama in the Western Division of The Gambia.
In our second year, 2013/14, we were able to sponsor a further two students who are working at Mansa Colley Bojang Nursery School. It became clear that there was so much more work to be done, as other schools in the Western Division looked to support their unqualified staff by giving them the opportunity to train as teachers.
So, in January 2014, Steve returned to The Gambia to visit Mansa Colley Bojang Nursery School, its students and teachers and families of the children. He was also able to visit The Gambia College; the education department of The Gambia University to gain a better understanding of how the teacher training programme works.
In January 2015, Steve and Sue once again visited the student teachers and schools, which now numbered 5 student teachers, 3 qualified teachers and 5 schools. They were also able to attend a meeting with the Early Childhood Development Association (ECDA) Western Coastal Region Executive Committee of headteachers. This is an association that will be working in partnership with SAGT to select students and schools for future support.
Further visits in 2016 and 2017 have seen more schools and more teachers receiving sponsorship. The partnership with the ECDA has also gone from strength to strength. Inaddition, SAGT now has an administrator in The Gambia. Chillel works on our behalf, locally, to represent SAGT and the interests of our sponsors.
SAGT is always looking to expand this work through further donations. If you have been able to contribute already, then on behalf of those teachers and children in The Gambia, I thank you very much indeed.
A reminder that all transfers made into the SAGT's bank account from this site will be going directly to support the people in The Gambia. Indeed, through Virgin Money Giving, gift aid is collected on behalf of the charity for UK tax payers, thereby increasing the donations received significantly.
100% of your money will go to the people you gave it to.
