The Gambia Horse And Donkey Trust
Homepage
The Gambia Horse and Donkey Trust (GHDT) aims to reduce rural poverty through improving the health, welfare and productivity of working equines in The Gambia. It was founded in 2002 to address the increasing problem of poor equine welfare. Keeping equines healthy is challenging in The Gambia, due to the prevalence of disease, poor nutrition, lack of knowledge and poverty. Horses and donkeys are used for both farming and transport in The Gambia and they are an essential part of Gambian farmer’s lives. A healthy animal can increase its owner’s income by 500%, therefore a productive animal results in a healthier family. Poverty is the cause of many of the problems that we see, so we participate in community development projects to improve the local economy as well as providing veterinary services and educational programmes about animal management.
