Since its formation in 1953 the League of Friends of the Kent & Canterbury Hospital has raised over £7.5m, providing extra comforts and high calibre medical equipment for the benefit of patients, staff and visitors. A few examples of the many and varied gifts are: an instrument set for the state of the art Da Vinci Surgical Robot, electric patient hoists for Occupational Therapy, 173 bedside tables for all in-patients, 113 electric Huntleigh profiling beds, numerous waiting room tables and chairs, bladder scanners and a contribution of £272,000 to the Hospital Trust’s appeal for digital mammography equipment. In addition, the League has funded the refurbishment of the Hospital’s hydrotherapy changing cubicles and jointly funded the creation of a sensory garden for Neuro Rehabilitation patients and their families.

The League also runs four highly successful hospital shops and a daily ward trolley round, managed by a small team of paid staff and 80+ dedicated volunteers. Other services include a daily Hospital Radio broadcast and ward library trolley round, all of which exemplify our commitment to serve patients, staff and visitors to the hospital.

Nine City and village groups form the backbone of the League and meet regularly to raise money from local events. Our main fundraising event is the annual joint Summer Fair in August which always takes place on the Saturday before the August bank holiday weekend, where hospital staff, League members and the public come together for an entertaining fundraising afternoon.

In April 2015 the League's Patron, the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, kindly agreed to open the Joan Bourner Diamond Jubilee Suite which provides two separate relatives’ hospitality rooms for those who were visiting very sick loved ones and has proved to be highly valued and appreciated.

In 2015 the League was delighted to receive the prestigious Queen's Award for Voluntary Service to recognise and reward excellence in voluntary activities...the equivalent of an MBE for volunteer groups.
