About Leuchie House

Leuchie House is a unique and extraordinary place providing specialist respite breaks for people with long term conditions including multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s, cerebral palsy and motor neurone disease, as well as spinal injuries and the effects of stroke.

Based in an 18th century mansion in the beautiful East Lothian countryside, we offer respite breaks over four, seven or 11 nights tailored to the physical and emotional needs of people with long term conditions. Included in every break is expert 24 hour nursing care, a health and wellbeing assessment and one-to-one physiotherapy, as well as plenty of opportunities to socialise during daily in-house activities and evening entertainment, outings in our accessible vehicles and freshly prepared meals.

Leuchie's mission is to enhance the lives of people with long term conditions, and their carers, through the provision of individualised respite breaks.

The importance of respite breaks

Long term conditions cause complex physical and mental health problems and eventually impact on every aspect of a person’s life, with families and carers hugely affected. They can affect people physically, making it harder for them to do everyday tasks without assistance from their carer, often a spouse of other family member. They may also affect people cognitively and emotionally, putting a strain on relationships.

As more emphasis is placed on care in the community, the 24/7 demands of caring for someone with a long term condition can leave carers at breaking point. A respite break at Leuchie provides a lifeline. Carers can have essential time away from their caring responsibilities safe in the knowledge that their loved one is receiving the specialist care they require where they can also enjoy a break of their own tailored to their interests and abilities.

Leuchie today

Leuchie is the only respite facility in Scotland able to provide such complex clinical care in a non-clinical environment. Over the past six years, Leuchie has become widely recognised as a centre for excellence in providing short respite breaks with a person-centred approach to care. With limited opportunities for respite in the UK, guests travel significant distances just to get a break. In 2016, guests came from 23 of Scotland’s 32 local authorities and 16 English local authorities.

Leuchie now delivers more than 6,500 respite days and 62,400 hours of nursing each year. Last year, we cared for people with 31 different long terms conditions with half of our guests requiring the highest levels of care.

Why we need your help

Leuchie House offers respite breaks at a fraction of the cost it takes to actually deliver its service. It costs just over £36,000 per week to run Leuchie, of which at least £17,000 (or 46%) must be raised from donations, grants and gifts in wills.

Your incredible fundraising efforts and support help us to continue to offer affordable and accessible respite for unpaid carers and those they care for, who are simply trying to live with the devastating effects of a long term condition.

In the words of one devoted husband and carer:

As a carer, you need regular breaks to recharge your batteries. Without Leuchie, the only option for my wife would be respite in a care home. People with long term conditions need something better than that.
