Edinburgh Food Project

The gift that keeps on giving

Edinburgh Food Project opened in 2012 to give people in crisis hope, practical help, and a brighter future.

We provide three days’ emergency food and support to local men, women and children in crisis. Our mission is to alleviate hunger and empower people to escape the cycle of poverty.

The families and individuals who come to us have been referred by care professionals: social workers, health visitors, third sector organisations and others, who work with us to help people in crisis so that they do not have to go hungry.

All of our food is generously donated by people in the local community (schools, businesses, churches and individuals) and volunteers of all backgrounds help to sort, pack, and distribute food parcels to individuals and families in need.

In 2019/20 we provided 19,684 emergency food parcels - an increase of 73% on the previous year. With COVID19, the recent changes to the benefit system, wage freezes and ever increasing living costs, we are preparing for a significant increase in demand.

We need your support to continue to help local people living in poverty. For every emergency food parcel we provide it costs us £10 in running costs. This covers, to name only a few; warehouse rent, energy bills, telephone and internet costs, diesel and office stationary. With the expected increase in demand we are preparing for these costs to increase.

By commiting to donate £10 a month, every month, you will allow us to budget and prepare for the future and to ensure we are able to continue to support local people in poverty.
