Scientific Exploration Society

Who we are

Scientific Exploration Society (SES) was founded in 1969 by Colonel John Blashford-Snell. It is the longest running scientific exploration organisation in the world. It is run as a charity and relies upon modest membership dues and donations to support its activities.

Each year through its Explorer Awards programme, SES provides grants to individuals leading scientific expeditions that focus on discovery, research and conservation in remote parts of the world offering knowledge, education and community aid. Post-expedition reports are produced, detailing the scientific research undertaken, and are disseminated to relevant organisations and via SES channels, helping to raise awareness of the issues.

Members and friends enjoy charity events and regular Explorer Talks and are also given opportunities to go on exciting scientific expeditions.

SES has an excellent Honorary Advisory Board, which includes Sir Ranulph Fiennes, Dr Jane Goodall, Rosie Stancer, Pen Hadow, Bear Grylls, Mark Beaumont, Tim Peake, Steve Backshall, Vanessa O'Brien and Levison Wood. Without its support, and that of its generous benefactors, members, trustees, part-time staff and volunteers, SES would struggle to do all that it does.

Help SES continue its vital work by donating towards its running costs.

Donations help to pay for the small number of part-time staff who manage every aspect of SES activity, such as producing the Scientific Explorer Annual Review and regular e-newsletters, maintaining the website and social media pages, the Explorer Awards programme and 'Oscars of Exploration' presentation evening, the scientific expeditions supported and made available for participation and a full and varied schedule of Explorer Talks and Charity Events organised for the SES community to enjoy. Any donation received, small or big, would be gratefully received. If you are a UK taxpayer, you may also be  eligible to Gift Aid your donation, enabling the Society to benefit further at no extra cost to you.
