The "Friends" were established to raise funds to assist with maintenance, refurbishment and ongoing development of the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum and our first fund raising project will be to support repair and renovation of the monument which was built in 1823 and is now showing its age. Estimated cost of the required works is £175,000

A Monument to the memory of the Ayrshire Bard, where he first drew breath, and in that County where his genius was fostered and matured shall be erected at or near the place of his birth. (First minute of Burns Monument Trust, 24 March 1814)

The foundation stone was laid in 1820 by Sir Alexander Boswell son of diarist James Boswell. The Monument opened to the public on 4 July 1823.

190 years later some restoration work is necessary to ensure that the Monument will continue to afford views to the surrounding landscape, so loved by Robert Burns.
