The Aloud Charity

Who we are

The purpose of The Aloud Charity is to engage each generation of young people across Wales with the power of choral singing. Through this activity we promote self-belief and self-confidence, encouraging aspiration, building skills and developing local communities.

Founded by Tim Rhys-Evans MBE in 2012 to administer a series of new choral projects, The Aloud Charity currently delivers activity through 3 main strands: Only Boys Aloud, Only Kids Aloud and the Only Boys Aloud Academi, as well as a number of additional projects.

Only Boys Aloud was born from a desire to encourage young Welsh men to be ambitious for their future and equipped with the life skills to fulfil their potential. OBA currently comprises 240 boys across 14 choirs, who meet weekly during term time at locations across Wales. Open to any boy between the ages of 11-19, there is no audition and no fee. The only project of its kind in Wales, open access is a key part of the OBA ethos and the choirs operate in some of the most deprived areas of country.

Only Kids Aloud is a pan-Wales choir build from 100 girls and boys between the ages of 8-11. The choir runs on a residential model with auditions taking place annually. While there is a charge for participants, it is heavily subsidised and financial assistance of up to 100% of cost is available. With no national children’s choir in Wales, OKA provides this opportunity for aspiring young singers.

The Academi is a summer residential course for regular OBA members serious about pursuing a career in the performing arts, and who show greatest vocal potential. Auditions are open to members between the ages of 16-19, and each year 32 successful applicants receive general musicianship tuition, individual singing lessons and sight-singing tuition from professional coaches. Our Academi choir performs more challenging repertoire in a range of languages and musical styles.

Other projects include Aloud in the Classroom, designed to develop the singing teaching skills and confidence of primary school teachers, and Only ‘Fitzalan’ Aloud, a Creative Collaborations project involving pupils of Fitzalan High School in Cardiff, facilitating song-writing workshops and vocal training with Award-winning writer and Aloud Ambassador Amy Wadge.
