Support our Motorbikes for Midwives Campaign!

Help us raise money to buy two motorbikes to be used in our new maternal health project in the south of Madagascar. These motorbikes will allow trained midwives to travel to the public basic health centres that we are collaborating with to assist in safe deliveries, perform antenatal check-ups and train community health workers.

Madagascar's poverty is a quiet tragedy.

According to the most recent statistics from the World Bank, the number of nurses and midwives per 1000 people in the UK is 9.47.

In sub-Saharan Africa, it's 0.82.

In Madagascar, it's 0.32.

Doctors for Madagascar aims to change this. Over the last 3 years, we've supported Malagasy surgeon Dr Elson Randrianantenaina and his wife Hanitra in setting up the Hopitaly Zoara, a new clinic in a town called Fotadrevo, which serves a population of around 150,000 people. Since establishing this link, we have sent a 40ft container of medical equipment, hospital tents, and an ambulance truck donated by hospitals and the German military. We're now in the process of expanding the hospital facilities to cope with the huge need in the region.

In order for the hospital to remain sustainable, it charges patients for treatment. However, many people simply cannot pay. In order to ensure that no-one should be refused life-saving treatment for lack of money, we pay for treatment for the poorest and most vulnerable patients.

On average, treatment for a child under 5 costs just £20.

With your help, we can ensure that no-one goes untreated.
