The Melos Sinfonia is an exciting and dynamic orchestra based in London that provides talented young musicians with the invaluable performing experience and exposure necessary to establish a career in the arts. The orchestra aims to undertake around four to six performances a year across a broad scope of genres, including smaller chamber works, large-scale symphonic repertoire and fully staged operatic productions.

Alongside cornerstones of the classical canon, the orchestra is committed to playing rarely-performed works and new compositions, thus providing vital opportunities to up-and-coming composers to have their pieces performed by a large group (a rarity for many young composers), and also affording its players the chance to perform pieces they will have not previously played, as well as entirely new pieces (a key component of any young musician’s training).

The orchestra draws its musicians – orchestral players, soloists and singers – from current students and recent graduates of the major conservatoires and universities across the UK, as well as from orchestras such as the European Union Youth Orchestra, Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester, Britten-Pears Orchestra and the Southbank Sinfonia.

2014-15 Season

Our 2014-15 season includes three operatic productions, three new commissions, two UK premieres of works by major Russian composers and the Russian premieres of several important British works across three performances in St. Petersburg, where we hope to be touring twice

Highlights include a concert performance of Rachmaninov’s rarely performed opera, Aleko; the Russian premiere of Peter Maxwell Davies’ Eight Songs for a Mad King, following a run of performances in London; new commissions from two up-and-coming British composers with whom we worked last summer; and the UK premiere of Boris Tishchenko’s Sinfonia Robusta.
