Scarf (Supporting children with additional needs, relatives and friends)
Who we are
Scarf is a parent-led charity, based in the New Forest, Hampshire. We organise regular term-time and holiday activities for children/young people with special needs and their families.
Our term-time activities include a drama club, a Saturday morning multi-sports club and a youth club. We also run a full programme of activities for the whole family every school holiday. Each programme is different and includes activities such as sports (eg. climbing, skiing, kayaking, surfing, fishing), crafts, days out to local attractions, the cinema, and much more.
The children that Scarf works with have a broad range of disabilities and special needs including Down's Syndrome, autism, cerebral palsy and learning difficulties. Families of children with special needs often find it difficult to access mainstream leisure or holiday activities. Scarf believes all children and young people should have access to high quality, stimulating and exciting opportunities and so we offer a wide range of fun, social, sporting and leisure activities.
Our approach is not just to meet the needs of the disabled child, but also to recognise the impact on the whole family, all of whom need fun and support. Parents and carers particularly value the opportunity to meet others in a similar situation and share experiences and gain support. At all our activities, we aim to create an inclusive and welcoming environment so all children and their parents feel comfortable and have the confidence to participate without worrying about being judged.
