The Prison Phoenix Trust
Who we are
The Prison Phoenix Trust encourages prisoners in their spiritual lives through meditation and yoga, working with silence and the breath. We offer individual support to prisoners and prison staff through weekly classes, correspondence, books, CDs, a radio show and newsletters. People of any faith or no faith can benefit. We honour all religions. The Prison Phoenix Trust was registered as a charity in 1988. We work all over the UK and The Republic of Ireland in prisons, young offender institutions, immigration removal centres, secure hospitals and probation hostels. We find that when prisoners practise meditation and yoga, they feel less angry and aggressive, sleep better and are less prone to taking drugs. They may be more ready to take up other educational activities and can develop self discipline and concentration, often for the first time. Most importantly, many of the prisoners tell us that through their breath they have found peace, and along with it, something within themselves that they can like.
