DMSF was co-founded by Commonwealth Games gold medallist Diane Modahl, who represented Great Britain in four Olympic Games from 1988 – 2000. Her early experiences as a young person from a deprived community, inspired her to establish a youth foundation to help those most in need.

For DMSF, potential can be about achieving or excelling in sport, school and life. It can be about competing and winning. Or it can simply be about making friends, joining in or learning respect. We help young people reach their potential by instilling a positive focus and a drive to succeed. We open their eyes to opportunities, even when a disadvantaged background may have made this more of a challenge. We encourage them to strive for personal success - whatever that looks like.

We help our young people develop their imagination and confidence, teaching them to act with integrity in all that they do. Our work promotes healthy lifestyles, positive self-esteem, social integration and the motivation to try to achieve anything they set their minds to.

We have a passionate team of coaches and mentors who deliver programmes for young people that tap into five main areas of development:

SPORT– Supporting Young People to achieve their potential
We have 10 high quality coaches who are the heartbeat of DMSF. They include two Olympians, an ex-British Muay Thai champion, an ex-England basketballer, an ex-International rugby player and a GB long jumper.

LIFE READINESS– Engaging disengaged Young People, particularly those at risk of being excluded from mainstream education
We have prevented 89% of our young people from being excluded from school. Each exclusion carries a cost of £370,000. This has provided a saving of £11,840,000 to the public purse.

NEIGHBOURHOOD EMPOWERMENT– Helping to diversify sport through coaching and volunteering.
Our community work is ingrained within several wards of inner city Manchester, with 14 weekly youth provisions. So far we have up-skilled 32 14-25 year olds with qualifications and supported 4 young adults into full time employment.

YOUTH CRIME REDUCTION– Preventing serious youth violence.
80% of our young people outside of mainstream education carry a knife. Through building trust and relationships, we have reduced anti-social behaviour in Collyhurst by 43% on nights we deliver our youth provision. On Friday evenings alone we engage 130 Young People in sport and activity meaning they are off the streets, safe and happy.

HEALTH– Improving the physical & mental health of children and young people.
25% of children aged 10 are obese. 70% of young people with mental health issues do not receive adequate interventions. In 2018, 800,000 children went to school without breakfast. During youth and holiday provisions we provide healthy hot meals to help tackle holiday hunger. Our mentors and coaches educate and discuss mental health and empower today’s youth to be active, resilient, positive and find a sense of purpose through and beyond sport.

We need your help please.  We rely on building partnerships with like minded organisations and people like you, who want to make a positive impact on the community and contribute to local skills, training and education. This enables our team to go out and do what we do best.  Turning barriers into opportunities to cross the DMSF Blue Line.
