The River Kennet is one of England's most important chalk streams. Some 45 miles long, it is the largest tributary of the Thames and in summer months contributes up to half its flow.

It runs through the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and passes by some of Britain's most important prehistoric sites, including the World Heritage Site of stone circles and avenue at Avebury and Silbury Hill.

Action for the River Kennet (ARK) was founded in 1990 to help to protect the River Kennet. We now have around 600 members and, for a small charity, ARK has had a big impact.

As a result of our campaigning and work, water quality has improved; there have been reductions in abstraction and reductions in the way water is used in our homes.

We have improved and restored miles of the river for both people and wildlife.
