School of Hard Knocks is a social inclusion charity, which runs courses that use rugby, boxing and other sports to tackle the issues surrounding unemployment, antisocial behaviour, crime and health. The original School of Hard Knocks programme has been running for three years and continues to provide a balance of on-field training, values-based lessons, employability training and individual mentoring for unemployed adults, with a very high success rate in helping participants into employment. With the addition of the Hard Knocks for Life mentoring programme, we will continue to support our participants following each course, to ensure that they remain in employment for the long-term and continue to make positive choices for their lives. SOHK for Schools began in January this year, with a three-year commitment to three groups of disengaged children in three different schools in East London. Using a similar structure to the adult programme, with rugby as a catalyst, the programme aims to help each individual to meet positive and realistic goals towards good behaviour, attendance and academic attainment, and to raise their aspirations for life after education.
