CARA (Centre for Action on Rape and Abuse) works with victims and survivors of sexual violence and child sexual abuse, providing independent, specialist support and promoting and representing their rights and needs.

  • 1 in 5 women and 1in 10 men has experienced some form of sexual violence since the age of 16 (Ministry of Justice, 2013).
  • 1 in 20 children experience child sexual abuse (NSPCC, 2011).
  • Only around 15 percent of those who experience sexual violence choose to report to the police (Ministry of Justice, 2013).

CARA works with adult women and men, young people (aged 13-19) and children aged 12 and under from across mid and north Essex.   We provide our services from our head office in Colchester and from outreach premises in Braintree, Chelmsford, Clacton-on-Sea and Great Dunmow.

Over the last year, CARA has supported over 700 adults, young people and children. We provide:

  • An advocacy service and support through the criminal justice process.
  • One-to-one counselling for adults.
  • Therapeutic support for young people, aged 12 to 19
  • Play therapy for children aged 12 and under, and one-to-one support for their parents and carers.
  • Women-only social groups.
  • Sexual Violence Prevention workshops for schools and training for professionals.
