CARA (Centre for Action on Rape and Abuse) works with victims and survivors of sexual violence and child sexual abuse, providing independent, specialist support and promoting and representing their rights and needs.

  • 1 in 5 women and up to 1 in 10 men has experienced some form of sexual violence since the age of 16 (Ministry of Justice).
  • 1 in 20 children experience child sexual abuse (NSPCC).
  • Only around 15 percent of those who experience sexual violence choose to report to the police (Ministry of Justice).

CARA works with adult women and men, young people (aged 12-19) and children aged under 12 from across mid and north Essex.   We provide our services from our head office in Colchester and from outreach premises in Braintree, Chelmsford, Clacton-on-Sea, Great Dunmow and Harwich.

Over the last year, CARA has supported over 1,100 adults, young people and children. We provide:

  • An Independent Sexual Violence Adviser (ISVA) service, supporting victims through the criminal justice process.
  • One-to-one specialist counselling for adults.
  • Specialist therapeutic support for young people, aged 12 to 19
  • Play therapy for children aged under 12, and one-to-one support for their parents and carers.
  • A women-only social group.
  • Sexual Violence Prevention workshops for schools and training for professionals.
