One in four of us will experience mental ill health at some point in our lives. Here in Suffolk, over 100,000 people are likely to have a moderate mental health issue, and suicide is the main cause of death for men aged 20-65 years.

We want to make Suffolk the best place in the world for talking about and taking care of mental wellbeing.

We’re exploring a new way of looking at mental health. Just as five-a-day, a little exercise and a balanced diet are part of keeping people physically healthy and ultimately out of hospital, we believe the same is true of mental health.

And, when we don’t look after our mental wellbeing, by meeting our emotional needs, apparently ‘well’ people can become ill surprisingly fast.

Our programme to educate and raise awareness will mean the entire population of Suffolk will have the tools to look after their mental ‘five-a-day’ and make a life that works.

Our prevention approach will mean the limited resources of the county can be better spent or saved. The NHS is stretched and unable to meet rising demand for mental health services, and mental ill health is the leading cause of sickness absence in the UK with 70 million days of work lost every year.

Over time, we will ask people in Suffolk about their knowledge of mental health and about how they are meeting their emotional needs. This will allow us to track Suffolk’s progress and we expect to see big improvements to mental wellbeing across the county.

Our priorities are threefold:

Firstly, our educational intervention programme – rolled out online, through schools, businesses, statutory services and elsewhere – will help people understand that they have emotional needs that must be met in order to stay mentally well.

Secondly, by focusing more time and effort on helping people keep themselves well, we hope the resources of the county can be spent in such a way that the NHS is there to help you when you need it.

Finally, we will be relentless in encouraging a similar emphasis on prevention among all organisations we interact with. We will encourage employers to recruit and value people with mental health issues, thus securing better outcomes for the employees and for the profits of those businesses.

We believe this preventative approach is the best way to improve the lives of families, individuals and businesses in Suffolk. If you agree, or would like to find out more, get in touch and help us make Suffolk the best place in the world to talk about and take care of mental health.
