The major causes of Mother and Newborn deaths and morbidity in Africa are :-Haemorrhage, Sepsis, Eclampsia, Obstructed Labour (resulting in obstetric fistulas), Miscarriage and poor resucitation of Newborn babies. ELSSA uses evidence based ‘skill and drills’ training EONC programmes for Mother and Newborn care, specifically developed for Africa.
Current programmes are concentrating on South Sudan because it has one of the highest rates of maternal and newborn deaths in Africa and very fragile health system. Also the immense problems of internally displaced people, conflict and famine. There are no paid employees, all ELSSA facilitators are volunteers and are unpaid. All donated monies are used directly by ELSSA to run the training courses and not by a third party and so are fully accountable
