NHS Big7Tea – help celebrate 70 years of the NHS!

The NHS celebrates its 70th birthday in July. People up and down the country will be coming together for Big7Tea parties to raise a cuppa and raise money for NHS charities.

The South Western Ambulance Service and our associated charity – which benefits those in our community who use our service and improves the welfare of our staff and volunteers – are delighted to be involved.

2nd March 2018:

Following a further meeting this afternoon with Bath & North East Somerset Council, the Police and other agencies, the Bath Half Marathon organisers have announced with deep regret that unfortunately the race on Sunday will not now go ahead.  The City of Bath was affected by heavy snowfall yesterday afternoon and evening, with further snow and freezing temperatures forecast to continue through to Sunday.

Andrew Taylor, Race Director of Bath Half Marathon said;  “Runner, spectator and volunteer safety is paramount for us and with the current road and pavement conditions cannot guarantee safety underfoot.  In addition, due to conditions on the national highways network, a number of our key contractors and suppliers are unable to guarantee delivery of critical services on Sunday.

“We have been hoping for the best all week, and up until yesterday morning we’d still not had any snow in Bath.  But yesterday’s snowfall, the forecast outlook, and the impact on available resources due to the Major Incident declared last night by the Police, plus loss of critical contractors and suppliers, and freezing conditions forecast for participants and volunteer has left us with no option but to cancel the event.  This is not a decision we have made lightly, we are experienced organisers and we have never had to cancel the event before, so as you can imagine we are as devastated as the runners that we have had to make this decision.

“We feel really sorry for all the runners that have trained and fundraised for their charities.

“Sadly, it is not possible to simply postpone the race to a future date.  A big 'closed road' participation event such as ours can't be easily re-scheduled, it is not like re-booking a spectator event in a fixed venue.  To re-schedule we would need to re-run stakeholder consultations, road closures, public notice periods, re-book specialist contractors and volunteers which takes a huge amount of forward planning to organise.  Also any new date might not suit participants who have specifically prepared for 4 March.

Update on our charity runners

Unfortunately three of our charity runners, due to illness and injury, are unable to take part in the Bath Half Marathon on Sunday 4 March.

With just over a week before the big day three replacement runners have bravely stepped up and will be raising sponsorship for the South Western Ambulance Service Charity.

Joining Paramedic Sarah Gibbins, is ECA Matt Corkish, Deputy Director of HR and OD Clare Melbourne, and Clare’s running club friend Sharon Wells.

I’m sure you will join us in wishing Sarah, Matt, Clare and Sharon all the very best.

The Bath Half Marathon takes place on Sunday 4 March 2018. It would be great to see you there to help cheer our runners along!

Bath Half Marathon 2018 – Introducing our charity runners!

We have been delighted with the level of interest from SWASFT staff and volunteers in running the 2018 Bath Half Marathon for the South Western Ambulance Service Charity.

We would like to introduce the four runners who have been successful in securing one of our charity entry places:

  • Anita Sorrell – Divisional Secretary (North)

Anita is a keen runner but has never run a half marathon before and is keen to challenge herself with this exciting goal.

  • Sarah Gibbins – Paramedic

Sarah has been running for over 15 years and has completed several half marathons.  Sarah regularly runs 4-5 miles, even after a long shift as she finds that it helps to clear her head, especially after a difficult of traumatic assignment.

It has been a few years since Sarah last ran a half marathon and she is now keen to push herself again on this distance.

  • David and Tracey Thorpe  - HART Paramedic (David)

David and Tracey are seasoned runners, with half marathons, 10km races and many other adventure runs under their belts.  Most recently David and Tracey completed two half marathons in October.

Keep an eye out for progress updates from our fab four as their training continues over the next few months.
