Who we are
Headway Surrey supports adults with acquired brain injuries (ABI), their families and carers, and promotes understanding of the implications of acquired brain injury (ABI) throughout Surrey. We help you to live well with your brain injury.
Injuries can be caused by road traffic accident, sports injury, work related accident, violence, falls, concussion, brain tumour, stroke, heart attack, lack of oxygen, encephalitis and other medical viruses.
We provide activities that aim to stimulate and form new neural pathways, teach strategies and skills to cope with deficiencies and maximise brain function, whilst building confidence to live well with the acquired brain injury.
A person with a brain injury becomes dependent on others and vulnerable because of their brain injury. It may leave a person struggling to cope with everyday tasks like reading, writing, talking, walking, washing or feeding themselves and can change an individual's personality, behaviour pattern, ability to make decisions and motivation.
Personal goals and ambitions may change in an instant and the simple pleasures in life can no longer be taken for granted - going for a walk, reading a book, going out with friends, even just saying "Hello". These problems have a huge impact on the lives of their families and friends. Friends will drift away, work relationships change, marriages may break down and social circles evaporate.
Headway Surrey provides a comprehensive range of services delivered by a Cognitive Rehabilitation Team and volunteers. The services we offer are:
- Centre based Group Sessions and virtual sessions.
- Satellite hubs in Surrey
- Support with welfare forms and meetings
- One-to-one assessments and support
- Friday Friends Social Sessions
- Community Outreach Visits to homes and hospitals
- Family and Carers Support Meetings
- Family education on ABI
- Befriending Scheme
- Social Events
- Brain Injury ID Card applications
We provide activities that aim to stimulate and form new neural pathways, teach strategies and skills to cope with deficiencies.
Annual running costs are in the region of £210,000. Continuing cuts from Social Services and Surrey County Council are having an impact on our funding and to make ends meet we hold events, talks, apply for grants, community funds and look for Corporate Sponsorship and Partnerships. Funding is a continual struggle, so your support is really appreciated.
Hold your own Pancake Party on Shrove Tuesday, hold a Hats for Headway Day, or take part of our Annual Guildford Sponsored Walk in May, which coincides with Brain Injury Awareness Week. You can support us with your own personal challenge, or hold your own fundraising event, such as cake bake, car wash or quiz.
We welcome Charity Partnerships, so if your group or company is interested, please contact us for more information.
There are other ways to support us, such as EasyFundraising.org, Amazon On Line, Give it Away, recycling used postage stamps and cars or just making a donation.
We always need volunteers, both regular and one-off. So if you have a skill or an interest in helping, please do get in touch at email@example.com
All your support is gratefully received and will help us continue our specialist cognitive rehabilitation for adults with acquired brain injury (ABI).
