BFIRST is a UK registered charity which trains surgeons working in the poorest countries in the world to enable them to undertake reconstructive Plastic Surgery, releasing children and adults from the state of poverty and destitution associated with disability and deformity. BFIRST supports projects across the developing world to train surgeons in their local environment to effectively manage devastating injuries. We train local surgeons and their staff to an independent level in reconstructive surgery, enabling them to treat their patients appropriately offering their communities a sustainable service. We offer local surgeons Fellowships in their chosen speciality, to gain valuable knowledge and expertise in specific surgical reconstructive methods, insight into ‘gold standards’ and best practice, how to build teams and develop their service. We train their nurses and therapists, because without them the patient care is not complete. We also provide them with the necessary instruments, dressings and with knowledge to grow and become independent. The mainstay of the educational programme is hands-on, face-to-face tutoring in the local environment, treating the most common local reconstructive problems, using local resources. This is augmented by the trainee attending courses and other units for specific training, which we also assist. BFIRST recognises that the solution for optimal learning has to be individually tailored to the available resources in the country, such as infrastructure, access to the internet and the local constellation of most pressing reconstructive needs. The solution for training will therefore not be the same in every country; it must be tailored, or it won’t help.
