Oarsome Chance brings about change for young people, aged from 9-19 years in the Portsmouth, Gosport and Havant areas who are disengaged from mainstream education and at risk of exclusion and suffering disadvantage.

The OC educational programmes offer a combination of vocational skills training (boat building, canvas skills and bike recycling) along with dry and on water rowing activities and provide educational and employability benefits to help them connect to a brighter future.

Oarsome Chance activities

Our programme activities include:

  • practical vocational training in our two workshops - in Gosport, where our Maritime Workshop teaches carpentry / boat building skills, as well as canvas skills. And our bicycle workshop in Havant, where we teach bike building and bike maintenance.
  • our Maritime Workshop has access to a tidal waterway where young people take part in on the water rowing. OC also have Royal Yacht Association (RYA) accreditation and we endeavour to give our young people the opportunity to take part in sailing events locally and further afield.
  • ‘dry’ indoor rowing sessions on ‘erg’ machines.
  • social enterprise activities through designing, producing and selling articles and accessories made from surplus sail and wood materials and the selling on of recycled bikes.

We work with local partners, including schools, PRUs and the local authority to identify young people who will benefit the most - these young people are already disengaged from the educational system, excluded from school or on very short timetables and the combination of practical and physical activities in a supportive and safe environment is proving very effective in re-engaging them and reintegrating them into their community.
