West Mersea Parish Church
(St Peter & St Paul) exists:
To celebrate God in worship
To love one another
To serve the wider community
Our Parish Church of St. Peter and St. Paul is the most ancient and arguably the most interesting building in West Mersea. The Church has been at the centre of the community since the 7th Century when the first building was constructed for worship.
Today nothing apparently remains of that first church, but it is possible to date the oldest part of the present building, the base of the tower, to around 960 AD. Most of the main structure is medieval, and it is clear that the church has been rebuilt and added to many times over the centuries.
Today the church continues faithfully to serve its Island community with a wide range of regular services, special occasions and community based activities.
