Norfolk Ornithologists' Association

Who we are

Holme Bird Observatory

The Norfolk Ornithologists' Association (NOA) is an independent Norfolk-based charity dedicated to the scientific study of birds. It focuses primarily on bird migration and population dynamics through bird ringing and daily monitoring, and the information collected acts as an indicator of environmental health locally, nationally and internationally.

Founded in 1970, the Association is based at Holme Bird Observatory, Norfolk's only accredited Bird Observatory, on the North Norfolk Coast, and also runs six other reserves. Members’ observations and sightings play an important role in ensuring that bird numbers are monitored accurately.

Our work is funded by membership subscriptions, grants, donations, permit sales and other fundraising. The NOA takes a friendly and personal approach to sharing its knowledge and enthusiasm with people of all ages. It draws its membership from Norfolk, from the UK and from abroad. The membership subscription begins at £20 for a single member; benefits of membership include dawn to dusk access to visitor reserves, four newsletters and an annual report each year, use of members’ hides on the NOA's principal reserves, and involvement in projects and studies. Volunteers are welcome and are an integral part of the Association’s work.

A membership application form can be found on our website, and we hope that you will join us. Day permits are also available for non-members visiting our reserves. Members and non-members are invited to donate via this page, to support our work. Even a very modest sum will help: with £5 we can buy 25 rings which will help us identify changes in our bird populations and movements, through our involvement in the British Trust for Ornithology’s ringing scheme. Larger sums will help with maintenance and habitat improvement on our reserves.
