Who we are
EFOD is a UK-based charity that develops and trains young professionals in engineering and construction by challenging them to deliver far reaching design and construction projects in areas of extreme poverty in Sub Saharan Africa.
Project teams are responsible for commissioning, designing and project delivery, as well as sourcing and training local labour to assist with construction. EFOD is also responsible for fundraising to ensure its projects get built Charity No: 1144140.
The North West branch is partnering with non-profit Zukuka Bora, to design and oversee construction of a coffee processing facility in Mbale, Uganda.
Zukuka Bora is a non proft initiative set up by Ugandan base charity JENGA Community Devlopment Outreach, to work with peasant farmers in the Mt. Elgon region to help them cultivate high quality Arabica coffee for the specialty market worldwide. Since its inception in 2017, they have trained over 1,500 peasant farmers in best practices in coffee cultivation and produced 20 tonnes of specialty graded green beans.
EFOD NW aim to build on the success of Zukuka Bora through the design and construction of a coffee processing facility in Mbale:
Coffee Drying Shelter - To control the environment and rate of drying which significantly impacts the coffee beans quality and price.
Coffee Processing Room - Hulling and roasting are currently outsource. However 80% of the coffee's final value is earned by the roaster / retailer. Processing in-house will captrue more of the value chain locally.
Coffee Storage Room - This will give the Zukuka Bora the flexibiilty to meet peak consumer demands.
Training Centre - To develop the knowledge and skills of local and provide a centre of excellence to attact tourists to Mbale.
