THE DAYLIGHT CLUB

The Daylight Club is a friendly and informal social club for adults of working age, with physical and other disabilities, living within the boundaries of the City and District of St Albans, Hertfordshire. Our members meet during the day on Wednesdays in Harpenden and on Fridays in St Albans. We meet throughout the year and we are run with the help of volunteers.

The Club was established in 1996.

The Club attracts a high proportion of members from the 20-40 year age group.

We receive no funding and rely solely on donations and gifts. We feel that our local area needs The Daylight Club, which we know makes a huge difference to the lives of our members.

Objectives

The Club aims to provide physically disabled adults with a range of stimulating activities, advice, information and opportunities for social interaction, so as to encourage independence and community involvement, avoid social isolation and inequality for people who are not always welcome in other social settings and, where appropriate, help in seeking meaningful occupation. For some, this is the only social activity away from their home or residential care.

Activities

While there is plenty of time for members to socialise, a variety of activities are also provided to suit all interests, such as cooking, craftwork, singing and music-making, exercise, photography, talks on various topics from guest speakers, involvement in the wider community, activities and educational or recreational trips.

The Club owns a tail lift minibus which is used to transport members to/from the Club and also on trips. When not in use by the Club, it is available for other local disability groups.

Our profile in the community has helped us in being adopted for fundraising by local organisations and members have taken part in these fundraising activities and also raised funds themselves through street collections.
