Camden Citizens Advice
Who we are
Citizens Advice Camden (CAC ) offers much-needed help to people affected by the economic impacts of the COVID-19 crisis. The scale of the impact means we are likely to see an unprecedented increase in demand for our services and we need your help to respond. Please donate to CAC today so that we can help those in need.
The current COVID-19 pandemic is impacting all of us beyond what most of us believed possible. Whilst we appear to be past the worst of the immediate health crises of the pandemic, in the weeks and months to come more of us will face a social and economic crisis due to lost income and jobs. During the initial weeks of the lockdown, Universal Credit claims increased by a factor of 10 and CAC has seen a similar increase in calls to its helplines. As the economic impact of COVID-19 bites, we’re also likely to see increases in debt levels and significant numbers of Camden residents encountering financial difficulty.
CAC is uniquely positioned to help people impacted by the economic impact of COVID-19 to get the support they need during and in the aftermath of the crisis. CAC has been part of the Camden community for 80 years and has the scale and experience to step in and support those most affected.
Last year alone CAC handled over 35,000 individual issues for more than 11,000 people and delivered millions in funding and debt relief for Camden’s residents.
CAC will be able to utilise its strengths and offer targeted COVID-19 support in the following ways:
- Accessing COVID-19 Related Employment Support – CAC will use its vast experience in advising residents to enable those affected by COVID-19 employment loss to get the financial support that they need.
- Navigating the Universal Credit system – it’s very likely that people that have never had to access Universal Credit prior to COVID-19 will need additional support that may only be available through Universal Credit. CAC helped people in Camden to access £4.8m in benefits in 2019/20, so is well-positioned to help
- Debt Advice – CCAB has been successful in relieving £1.8m in debt from Camden residents in 2019/20. This experience will enable us to help many more people in need whose debts have become unmanageable.
Covid-19 is heavily impacting our existing clients, often the most vulnerable in our community with little to buffer them against crisis. Their advice needs are increasing. COVID-19’s economic impact is also being felt by people who have never needed to rely on any form of state support before. Some of those may have no idea of where to even start if they need help.
During this time, CAC will need to support even more people and continue our efforts across our community. It will be vital to retain advice services including those in health and education settings and provide support to families afflicted by long-term illness and to families struggling to stay together and meet needs across the generations.
