Imagine not being able to ask for what you want in the shop or cafe. Not being able to ask for help when you are lost or just want to know if the bus you are hoping to catch has gone. Imagine not being able to communicate. For thousands of people with disabilities this is their daily challenge.

Whether they have a life time condition that makes speech difficult, or have lost speech through injury or accident, or struggle with talking to others due to mental health conditions. Whatever the cause, being unable to ask for assistance or what you need makes even a simple trip to the shop seem insurmountable. The BlueAssist system was created to provide a bridge between people with disabilities and the community around them.

The system is built around a simple logo of a white person on a blue background, with his head forming part of a question mark. (take a look at the card in our photos). Just as we have the sign of a wheelchair to identify support for those with physical difficulties the BlueAssist logo helps those for whom communication is hard.

Our Aim is to ensure people who need to use the BlueAssist Symbol to do so for FREE, we believe no person should be prevented by cost. They can either use BlueAssist Cards which are available to download free from our website. Or they can request some from us and we will send them out by post. BlueAssist is available to use on a smart phone, free to download BlueAssist Light from Google Play or Apple Store. Before setting out they consider (with help when needed) the type of questions they might need to ask and then put these on the card or phone. These can be questions asking for something such as ‘Please can I have a cup of coffee’ or requesting help ‘Please can you tell me how to get to the station’; any message at all. The space on the bottom corner of the card allows a picture to be placed to aid anyone using it, who might not be able to read well, to recognise which card to use. When out they can show the card to anyone and the person will read the message and know how to help. Members of the public often want to help, BlueAssist shows them how.

It cost just £4 to send out a pack of cards and give someone a voice.

So John can catch his bus, or Shirley can order a coffee, or Sally's daughter can just feel more relaxed about her ederly mother when she is out and about.
