Bron-y-Gader PhotoBron-y-Gader Outdoor Pursuits Centre is owned and managed by The Blackburn & District Outdoor Pursuits Centre Trust.

This charitable trust was formed in 1970 by members of the Blackburn & District Duke of Edinburgh's Award Council for the purpose of helping and educating young people by their leisure activities so as to develop their physical, mental and spiritual capacities that they may grow to full maturity as individuals and members of society.

To support this mission, the Trust bought Bron-y-Gader, a derelict farmhouse with no roof and crumbling walls, in Snowdonia National Park to provide a space for young people to experience the outdoors. In September 1973, after a lot of work by both professionals and volunteers from all over Blackburn and surrounding areas, Bron-y-Gader opened the doors to its first guests.

Initially, without electricity, mains water or telephone, over the years improvements have continued to be made to the property. Today the centre has mains electricity and ground sourced filtered water which has improved the quality of the accommodation for visitors, while maintaining the original rustic, outdoors feel.

The Trust and the Centre are managed entirely by volunteers with no paid employees, so all funds raised by donations go towards the maintenance and development of the centre.

To support the aims of the Trust, we keep the cost to groups using the Centre to a minimum, so that young people in particular can experience 'the great outdoors' away from the hustle and bustle of urban life. This means that we rely a lot on donations for improvements and development of the centre.
