Africa BEECause

Who we are

Africa BEECause was formed in 2009 and we are currently operating in The Gambia and Senegal as BEECause Gambia.  Our mission is to encourage beekeeping as a way of improving livelihoods, particularly for the rural poor, and to help people understand the importance of bees and pollination.

Beekeeping has the potential to make a very real difference to peoples lives - support and training from BEECause projects will help individuals and communities to improve their economic well-being. Beekeeping is a low tech, relatively low cost activity which is possible in most rural areas and offers the opportunity of additional income. Bee products (honey, beeswax, propolis and royal jelly) are valuable and easily marketable and beekeeping leads to substantial increases in crop yields through improved pollination. Beekeeping also benefits the environment because more pollination means more seeds and more plants, esecially important in environmental regeneration, eg reforestation.

We have a base in Lamin, in The Gambia where we employ nine people (Gambians) with a demonstration apiary. Some of our training is carried out here but most training takes place in villages and communities. We have trained around 800 beekeepers.

We are working to

  • significantly increase the number of rural people practising beekeeping
  • ntroduce modern techniques and good practice through trials and training
  • increase the range of products, yields and product quality of honey and wax
  • reduce costs to the producer and prices to the consumer, while maintaining returns
  • introduce beekeeping and related education into schools and community groups
  • ensure that technical innovation becomes good practice, through training and ongoing support.
