Who we are
Afrikaya is a UK based charity that has purchased land and built a nursery school in New Yundum, the Gambia. Working in partnership with the local community, Afrikaya is helping to build a better future for Gambian children through secular education and medical assistance. Also providing life long learning through the provision of an adult skills centre. Our aim is to give hope to the children and their families and to give the community the chance to take control of their lives and end poverty through education. The Afrikaya Nursery School is now fully operation, providing nursery education for 166 children age 3 - 7 years who would otherwise have no education until they reach primary school at 7. The school incorporates a fully functional kitchen providing a nutritional school meal to every child. Also a school medical centre overseeing the health and well being of every child. It employs 14 staff members mostly from the local community, including 4 qualified teachers, 1 teacher currently in training, and 2 volunteer student teachers. The current project plan, as well as the maintenance of the school, is to complete the build a community centre and an adult skills centre on site and to upgrade the solar power to provide electricity for the whole site. Once the community centre is complete, this will go a long way to ensuring that the school becomes self-financing.
