ASPIE promotes the intelligence of adults who live with the complexities of Asperger's, part of the autistic spectrum and a hidden disability. ASPIE provides a safe place and relaxed opportunity for 50+ members to meet weekly to socialise and do things together with like-minded others.

This reduces anxiety, isolation and  self-harm and improves the quality of life of its growing membership of Asperger adults by increasing their confidence and self-worth through varied self-led activities, workshops and mentoring  overseen by a small dedicated team.  In-house Autism specific consultations prevent debilitating issues descending into crisis.

As a result members, often for the first time, find a sense of belonging and friendship boosting motivation to achieve their own personal goals whether they be remaining in or returning to education and employment, and/or living independently as well as enjoying leisure and cultural pursuits in the community that most non-aspies take for granted. www.aspie.org.uk

Background - The Autism Act 2009 recognises the needs of adults on the autistic spectrum but implementation of the act by local authorities and health bodies in providing appropriate services is slow.

Professor Simon Baron-Cohen Director of Cambridge University's Autism Research Centre “Adults with Asperger Syndrome often suffer secondary depression due to social isolation, loneliness, social exclusion, lack of community services,under-achievement and unemployment. Their depression and risk of suicide are preventable with the appropriate support. This study should be a wake up call for the urgent need for high quality services to prevent the
tragic waste of even a single life.” www.cam.ac.uk/.../adults-with-asperger-syndrome-at-greater-risk-of-suicide
