Bury Society for Blind and Partially Sighted People is a registered charity and the aim of the Society is to enhance the quality of life for all visually impaired people within the Metropilitain Borough of Bury.

The Society was founded in 1922 and for many years just held social events for local visually impaired people. It wasn't until 1994 that the Society became established with premises, staff, volunteers, a Committee and Trustees. In 2005 the Society made the transition to a Company Limited by Guarantee; the Committee then became the Board of Directors.

In August 2011 the Society moved to it's current base at Wolstenholme House, 4 Tenterden Street, Bury, enabling a wider range of services to be provided and available for service users.

Sight loss is an isolating condition and seclusion, lonliness, anxiety and depression can soon set in, removing individuals from their local communities. The work of the Society is about supporting these individuals through difficult times, practically and emotionally, as well as promoting independence. This is achieved by offering a variety of support services:

  • Eye Talk Support Sessions
  • Resource Centre
  • Home Assessment Service
  • Befriending
  • Social Events
  • Benefits Information
  • Volunteer Drivers
  • Awareness Training,
  • Support Clinics
  • Quarterly Newsletter

Maintaining and improving our services depends very much on the voluntary help we receive. The Society is funded by legacies and voluntary donations which are desperately needed to supplement the grants we receive.
