Children of Colombia.
Who we are
Children of Colombia is a non-profit making organisation founded in 2002 to help very poor, sick and disadvantaged youngsters in Colombia, S America. It was set up around a kitchen table by Rachel Leighton who had lived in Colombia and had strong connections to the country. Today, all the Trustees have lived in Colombia and the Charities we support there are known to us personally. We are all volunteers committed to keeping overheads to a bare minimum so all donations go directly to help the children and not on salaries, offices or expenses. Funds are sent to three charitable organisations in Colombia involved with the care and education of hundreds of children and young people.
At Hogares Luz y Vida, very disabled, sick and terminally ill children are lovingly cared for and each child is treated with respect and encouraged to live to their full potential. The home in downtown Bogota is in one of the poorest districts, but inside the rooms are full of light and laughter with green outdoor courtyards and brightly decorated, cheerful bedrooms and treatment rooms. Their next project is an in-house clinic to cut down on expensive and uncomfortable hospital visits.
Older girls from severely dysfunctional backgrounds who have suffered sexual and other abuse find encouragement and mentoring at Fundacion Fenix. Here they have the support structure to enable them to return to full-time education and study towards a career in the health and social care sectors and several have already graduated at the top of their class in medicine, nursing and dentistry. They intend to work in the community to help and mentor other vulnerable children.
Children of Colombia also supports Natutama in the Amazon which promotes conservation of this unique and vital ecosystem. Natutama provides workshops for the local community for adults and children in the neighbouring town and the Ticuna indians who live nearby. With a combination of native traditions and scientific expertise Natutama monitors the environment and involves the community in learning about and caring for the well-being of their natural surroundings for the benefit of every one of us.
