The Harrold Centre provides much valued community focused activities and services to the residents of Harrold and the surrounding villages. Located in the very heart of the village, Harrold Centre is more than a building and more than the activities taking place within it. It is where and how people can become involved in the community and village life. Not only does it improve individual quality of life by contributing to social, physical, economic, educational and environmental wellbeing, it also positively impacts on the social cohesion of the village through the sharing of common interest and experience, resulting in friendship, togetherness, a sense of belonging and community spirit. It has been, and will soon be again, home to many social activities, including drama and film shows, children’s groups, dance groups, a meeting place for village organisations and a place for social events and celebrations for individuals and organisations. It remains the home for the local snooker and tennis clubs.
The fabric and facilities of the Harrold Centre have been in serious need of refurbishment and modernization for several years. During 2015, an exciting and cost-effective scheme was finalised, and the long-awaited redevelopment works commenced in late 2016. The works will involve a small extension at the rear of the existing building together with a total redesign and refurbishment of the interior. This will result in new toilets with a separate disabled toilet, new kitchen and bar area, a spacious entrance lobby, additional meeting/activities room, greatly improved storage facilities and better use of existing space.
When completed, the Centre will be an attractive, welcoming and user-friendly building with greatly improved and up to date facilities. More people will be able to participate in a wider range of activities and events in a far more comfortable environment. Furthermore, completion will ensure the preservation of the last historic building in the village with a significant association with the leather trade and our local industrial heritage.
