Charity number

Jinja DEAF (Jinja Deaf Education Access Fund) Registered Charity no. 1124205 was set up in 2007 after its founder visited Jinja District in Uganda and witnessed the enormous barriers deaf children there face in accessing education.

What we do

  • We fund essential sign language support staff who enable deaf children to access the curriculum through sign language and to form friendships through fluent communication.
  • We give bursaries to a small number of deaf children so that they can be boarders. These children would not otherwise be able to go to school because they do not live near enough to be day pupils and their families cannot afford boarding fees.
  • With a charity that has an office in Jinja called Softpower Education we give workshops for parents, teachers, school matrons and charity workers so that they can communicate with deaf children through sign language and learn to appreciate the needs and the potential of these children.

What it costs

  • £15 a month pays for boarding for a deaf child so that they can attend a government school with sign language support instead of being isolated at home with no access to education.
  • £100 a month pays for a school sign language interpreter to support deaf children attending mainstream classes taught by a non-signing teacher.
  • £100 a month pays for a deaf instructor to teach Ugandan sign language to pupils and teachers and to provide a valuable deaf role model.
  • £100 pays for training a parent, school matron or charity worker to communicate with deaf children through signing.
