PAPYRUS works to prevent young suicide and promote emotional wellbeing in young people.

Suicide is the leading cause of death in all young people. Most PAPYRUS members have been bereaved by a young suicide; some have been affected by thoughts of suicide and want to prevent others’ deaths. PAPYRUS aims to:

  • Reduce the stigma of suicide and normalise mental health
  • Train people to intervene when they are worried that someone may be suicidal
  • Work with the print and broadcast media to ensure sensitive reporting on suicide
  • Raise the profile of and run our national suicide prevention helpline, HOPELineUK
  • Provide accessible literature and a jargon-free website for young people/caregivers
  • Reduce the impact of online pro-suicide material
  • Listen to young people and their family and friends, especially suicide survivors
  • Contribute to local/national suicide prevention strategies to ensure members’ experiences are learned from
