Trust PA Spinal Injury Charity
Homepage
Trust PA -Spinal Injury Repair Charity was set up in memory of Paul-Andre Blundell - known to all as "P-A".
Sadly he broke his neck during a rugby tackle in 2001. He was then facing the life changing prospect of life in a wheelchair with permanent paralysis and inability to breathe unaided.
We are working to help fund the process of converting the latest pioneering science into real treatments for the repair of permanent paralysis from a broken neck or back - known as spinal cord injury (SCI). This will restore sensation and movement to SCI men, women and children.
P-A heard of this work by Prof Geoff Raisman and his team and was inspired to fight for his future so we started to fund this work then... Sadly he died in rehab age just 26yrs from a blood clot, before he had the chance to be involved but we continue this important work in his memory.
We have helped to fund the work to develop Chondroitinase a compound to eat away at the scar tissue to aid growth of new nerves. In 2016 the 1st successful operation on a paralysed man by grafting his nasal cells into the damaged spine was completed using Prof Raisman`s technique as seen on BBC Panorama.
Now we must continue help fund safe human clinical trials with patients in the UK asap to establish successful, and repeatable treatments in the NHS as soon as possible.
The ultimate aim of the team at UCL is to establish the treatment as a non-invasive injection so negating the need for surgery at all and available at all A&E depts for immediate use after a serious neck or back injury accident.
Just imagine being suddenly paralysed and in a wheelchair for the rest of your life! FACTS every 6-8hrs i.e. 4 times every day in the UK, people have paralysing accidents during normal daily activities like driving, work, sport, diy, etc. The average age of those facing this daunting life-changing prospect - is just 19yrs.
We can`t stop accidents happening but we can all help to fund the solution to this devastating injury with its cruel results... Please help us so that treatments available in NHS Hospitals as soon as possible in P-A`s memory.
Our latest achievement is the recognition from World Rugby of their using "Eyes UP" Safe Play tackle basic training technique for teaching rugby to all players, see www.trustpa.org homepage -Eyes Up" info for full details.
